Stephanie Tablante is in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas by Stephanie Tablante

“The recently-opened City Center along LV Boulevard. The shallow pool reflects the amazing architecture of the skyscrapers.

Las Vegas2 by Stephanie Tablante

“An interior walkway trellis sculpture. I like the juxtaposition of the modern metal forms with plants. It’s like a physical symbol of how modern construction aims to be environmentally conscious here. I’ve been living in LV since 2003, practicing architecture.”

Our agents at work

January 31, 2010 By: jessicazafra Category: Places, World Domination Update 1 Comment →

Our Agents of World Domination are all over the world, transforming every corner into an outpost of the Philippines. This week in dispatches:

Deepa Paul is in Singapore.

Oxley Road, Singapore by Deepa Paul

“This is my office in Singapore. It’s a pre-WWII house (considered prehistoric by Singapore standards) on Oxley Road, walking distance from Orchard and a few houses down from Lee Kuan Yew’s house. Taxi drivers are struck dumb with fear/reverence/awe whenever I tell them to take me to work, and they go extra slow when passing by Uncle Lee’s house. He has gurkhas (specially trained Nepalese honor guards) stationed in front of his house who generally stop people from taking photos, walking on his side of the street, and coming any closer when his car is driving into/out of the garage. But I’m sure they’re trained to do more than that.”

Meg Francisco is in Bangkok.

Cat Societe, Bangkok by Meg Francisco

“This is the Petropolitan hotel at Ozono, Sukhumvit Soi 39. Our poodle stays at this pet hotel whenever we all leave Bangkok (e.g. Christmas in Manila). The cats of the owner lounge in “Cat Societe” next door, along with the boarded cats.”

Rhea Codizal is in Dubai.

Dubai by Rhea Codizal

“This photo was taken between Souk Al Bahar & Dubai Mall in Downtown Dubai four days after the inauguration of Burj Khalifa, the highest building in the world…so far. I have been living and working in Dubai since 2006. The Filipino community is estimated the 4th largest ethnic group in the UAE.”

Rosemarie Ramos is in Berlin.

Victory Column, Berlin by Rosemarie Ramos

“Victoria, from her perch atop the Siegessaeule (Victory Column), has seen unification wars, love parades, and Barack Obama. I bring our visiting officials and other guests here for the requisite “picture-taking” and, when they’re up for it, take them up the 285 steps to the top to see the 27-foot Victoria up-close.”

Antonio is in Chicago.

The Point, Lake Michigan by Antonio

“A surreal shot of Lake Michigan at a spot in Hyde Park, Chicago known as “The Point.” Taken with a vintage Zenit Soviet camera.”

Abegail Navarro is in New York.

These pictures are fantastic, send more.

Who’s in the White House?

Apart from the head chef, lots of Pinoys. If you’re new to our World Domination Theory, read this.

Cityscapes

Today in the World Domination Tracker: Cities that have been colonized by Pinoys.

Sinned Gutierrez is in Doha, Qatar.

Doha, Qatar by Sinned Gutierrez
“This is the view from my fifth floor window of the Doha skyline at 9 am. I’ve called this place home since 2002. Look at all the construction. Hmm.”

Leah Laxa is in Auckland, New Zealand.

Auckland, NZ by Leah Laxa

“This photo of the Auckland Central Business District includes just about the only buildings you’ll see in NZ’s largest city, population 1.3 million; the rest of is suburbs.”

Edu Niala is in Singapore.

“This is the back side of the 10-storey Iluma Mall in Singapore which opened in March 2009. Designed by a German firm, it stands out in an area full of traditional shops, old churches and ‘Baclaran-type’ stalls. The facade actually features a crystal mesh installation that illuminates at night, hence the name.

“What’s interesting is that the alley beside the mall is “Manila St”, something Filipino tourists may not necessarily notice when they come here.”

From our far-flung correspondents

Our World Domination Tracker takes us to places few of us have visited, and as Stella Arnaldo just pointed out, “There are Filipinos in Haiti!”

Jo-Ann Cajigal is in Gniezno, Poland.

Gniezno, Poland by Jo-Ann Cajigal

“Winter in Gniezno, Poland. If you draw a straight line from Berlin to Warsaw, Gniezno’s right smack in the middle.”

Suzy is in Inverness, Scotland.

Inverness by Suzy V

“Being a huge fan of A Room with a View I always try to book a room in a hotel/inn/B&B with, well, a view. I took this photo on our first night in Inverness, Scotland.”

Earl Tayona is in Paris, Ontario.

Paris, Ontario by Earl Tayona

“The only hotel in my second home: the Arlington Hotel of Paris, Ontario, Canada. Arlington Hotel appears in Michael Ondaatje’s novel In the Skin of a Lion. Paris is the small town in southern Ontario where Alexander Graham Bell made his first phone call from his town of Brantford. Paris downtown is old, so old that the floors of the stores creak when I take a walk during my week off from working as an aliping saguiguilid.”

Thanks to our Agents of World Domination for these terrific pictures. If you’re a Filipino living abroad (living and working, not just taking a vacation), send a photo of your location to koosi.obrien@gmail.com.

War and Peace in the 21st century

Today in our World Domination Tracker:

Paolo Maligaya was in Badakhshan, Afghanistan.

Aghanistan by Paolo Maligaya

“These photos were taken last year in the northern Afghan province of Badakhshan where I was deployed for a month as a long-term international election observer. We got the shock of our lives to discover that many parts of Afghanistan are actually very pretty and the people very warm and hospitable, a far cry from the images of Kandahar (in the southern region where most international journalists are assigned) that we are so used to on CNN and other media outlets.”

Samjuan is in Los Angeles.
Pershing Square, LA by Samjuan
“This is Broadway street in Los Angeles, California where I take my morning bus to work. The place channels the atmosphere of chaos and dirt from the streets of Quiapo, Manila.”

Kates Catan is in Osaka, Japan.

Osaka by Kates Catan
“This is Baron Fujita’s Garden, hidden in the hustle and bustle of Osaka Business Park. I think only the residents around the area know of this place. I happened to get lost one day and stumbled into the garden. It’s very pretty in the autumn and spring and it’s a good place to read a book or take the kids out for a picnic.”
