Lots and lots of steel

Today’s theme in the World Domination Tracker: Contemporary architecture.

Kelvin Samson is in Toronto, Canada.

Toronto by Kelvin Samson
“This was taken on the Skywalk from Union Station in Toronto. This is a walkway connecting the Union subway station to the CN Tower and the Rogers Centre. I always notice the unique architecture while walking. I use this as an excuse to bump into someone cute. Hahaha.”

Ritchie Nolasco is in Abu Dhabi.

Yas Hotel, Abu Dhabi by Ritchie Nolasco
“This is the Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi where the recent F1 race was held. I thought I was jaded about crazy architecture in the Emirates, but this one still amazes me.”

Penang by Claire Silvestre

“Taken from Batu Ferringhi Beach in Penang. Malaysia. My sister was trying to parasail as the sun set.”

Ody Patron is in Vienna.

“This is the Rathaus/City Hall, in front of which a skating rink is built every January. In the foreground is my travelling doll, Miss Igorota, whose adventures can be followed on the blog, http://missigorota.blogspot.com. There are other Miss Iggy correspondents in the Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore and the USA.”

From Memphis to Mosul

January 04, 2010 By: jessicazafra Category: World Domination Update No Comments →

Today on our World Domination Tracker:

Marje Medina is in Memphis, Tennessee.

Graceland by Marje Medina

“Hard decision on what to send you…the famous ducks of the Peabody Hotel? Beale Street at night? Site of the National Civil Rights Museum which was originally Lorraine Motel (where Dr. Martin Luther King was assasinated)? Front door of Sun Studios (where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis started their careers)? Then again, no contest: here’s the gate of Graceland, home of The King. The wall has graffiti by the millions of visitors who have paid homage.

“We have an “Elvis Week” twice a year…in January (week of the 18th, his birth) and August (week of the 16th, his death) when Elvii of various ages, genres (Jail house Rock Elvis, Viva Las Vegas Elvis, bloated Elvis, etc) and persuasions arrive by the thousands to pay tribute.

“What happens in Vegas, started in Memphis.”

Ari Ngaseo was in Mosul, Iraq.

Mosul, Iraq by Ari Ngaseo

“The open sewers below, the tangle of electric wires overhead, the streets strewn with rubbish and the stench of decay–it was Manila by the Tigris.”

Wherever we are, we feel right at home.

2010: A Terrestrial Odyssey, sunny edition

January 01, 2010 By: jessicazafra Category: Places, World Domination Update No Comments →

The World Domination Tracker highlights our sunnier outposts (though it can get very cold at certain times of the year).

Walter Robles is in the Canary Islands, Spain.

Casablanca, Gran Canaria, Spain by Walter Robles

“This is Casablanca, not in Morocco, but in Gran Canaria, Spain. It’s a small town about an hour north of Las Palmas. The weather is perfect year round. Along the winding tiny streets are tapas bars, cozy restaurants and street markets on Sundays. I love this place. I stay in a farm owned by a German couple I met while diving in Coron years ago. I help in their orange farm (making marmalade) and goat farm (making smoked cheese), and do the cooking in exchange for free accommodations. Best deal in the world!”

Mervin Meruenas was in Kathmandu.

Jay-Ann Redondo is in Biel-Bienne, Switzerland.

Biel-Bienne, Switzerland by Jay-Ann Redondo

“This photo was taken in Biel-Bienne, Switzerland in late June 2009 during the annual summer festival, where street artists converge and show off their stuff. Biel-Bienne is the watch capital of Switzerland: the offices and factories of Swatch, Rolex, Omega, etc. can be found in this rather obscure Swiss town. It was only late (last) year that the local government started to promote the city as the watch capital by installing clock display stands of various brands along the main streets.”
